Not all VPNs serve the same purpose. Remote access VPNs are designed for individual users who need to securely connect their personal device to a private network, such as an employee connecting from home to their company’s internal systems.
Site-to-site VPNs, in contrast, connect entire networks to one another, commonly used to link a company’s branch offices or data centers into a single, unified private network. Instead of individual devices establishing separate connections, the VPN tunnel is created between network gateways, allowing all devices within each location to communicate securely without needing individual VPN clients.
The technical setup for site-to-site VPNs is generally more complex, often involving dedicated hardware or specialized router configurations, since it needs to handle traffic for many users and devices simultaneously.
Understanding this distinction helps clarify why consumer VPN apps and enterprise network infrastructure, while built on similar underlying principles, are designed to solve fundamentally different problems.
