Installing a VPN directly on a home router extends protection to every device connected to that network, including smart home gadgets and devices that do not support installing VPN apps individually. This approach centralizes VPN management instead of configuring each device separately.
Not all routers support VPN configuration out of the box. Many require flashing custom firmware such as DD-WRT or OpenWrt, which unlocks VPN client functionality but also carries some risk if not done carefully, since improper firmware installation can affect router stability.
Once configured, a router-level VPN typically introduces more noticeable speed reduction than a single-device VPN app, since the router’s processor now handles encryption for all connected devices simultaneously rather than just one.
For households with many connected devices, especially those lacking native VPN support, a router-based setup can be a practical way to extend consistent protection across an entire home network.
