A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a remote server operated by the VPN provider. Instead of your internet traffic traveling directly to websites and services, it first passes through this tunnel, which hides your real IP address and scrambles the data so it cannot be easily read by outside observers.
At a technical level, a VPN client on your device negotiates an encrypted session with a VPN server using a chosen protocol. Once the handshake is complete, all outgoing traffic is wrapped in an additional layer of encryption before it leaves your device. The receiving server then decrypts the traffic and forwards it to its final destination on your behalf.
This process offers several practical benefits: it protects data on unsecured networks such as public Wi-Fi, it can mask your approximate location, and it prevents your internet service provider from easily inspecting the content of your traffic. However, a VPN does not make you completely anonymous online, since websites can still track you through cookies, browser fingerprinting, and account logins.
Understanding these basics helps set realistic expectations about what a VPN can and cannot protect against, which is the first step toward using one effectively.
