VPN vs Proxy: Key Differences You Should Know

VPNs and proxies are often mentioned together, but they work quite differently under the hood. A proxy server acts as an intermediary for specific types of traffic, typically web browsing, and simply forwards your requests without necessarily encrypting them. A VPN, on the other hand, encrypts all traffic leaving your device at the operating system level, covering apps and services beyond just your browser.

Because proxies usually operate at the application layer, they are often faster and lighter, making them useful for quick tasks like changing your apparent location for a single website. VPNs require more processing overhead due to encryption, but they provide much stronger privacy and security guarantees across your entire internet connection.

Another key difference lies in trust and logging. Since a proxy or VPN provider can technically see your traffic, the provider’s logging policy and jurisdiction matter significantly regardless of which technology you choose.

For most everyday privacy and security needs, a reputable VPN offers broader protection than a simple proxy, though proxies still have their place for narrow, specific use cases.
