As remote and hybrid work arrangements have become standard practice, businesses increasingly depend on VPNs to secure connections between employees and internal company resources. A corporate VPN allows remote staff to access internal servers, file shares, and applications as though they were physically connected to the office network.
This setup reduces the risk of sensitive company data being exposed over unsecured home or public networks. It also allows IT departments to enforce consistent security policies, such as requiring multi-factor authentication before granting VPN access, regardless of where an employee is physically located.
Site-to-site VPNs extend this concept further by securely connecting entire office locations or data centers, allowing branch offices to communicate as if they were on the same local network.
While VPNs are a valuable layer of defense, security-conscious organizations typically pair them with endpoint protection, strict access controls, and regular audits to build a more complete security posture.
