Encryption is the backbone of every VPN connection. Without it, a VPN would be little more than a simple relay that reroutes traffic without providing any meaningful privacy or security benefit. Most providers use the Advanced Encryption Standard with 256-bit keys, often written as AES-256, which is considered extremely difficult to break with current computing technology. This cipher is combined with a key exchange mechanism, commonly based on Diffie-Hellman or elliptic curve variants, to establish a secure session without ever transmitting the actual encryption key over the network.
On top of the cipher itself, VPNs use specific protocols such as OpenVPN, WireGuard, and IKEv2/IPsec to manage how the encrypted tunnel is created, maintained, and closed. Each protocol makes different trade-offs between speed, security, and compatibility with various devices and networks.
